Resources for Young Adult Ministry

Below you will find several helpful resources for starting or continuing a Ministry to Young Adults in your parish. Check back regularly since these will be updated.

Sons and Daughters of the Light
Background
In the fall of 1993, following Pope John Paul II's trip to Denver for World Youth Day, the Catholic Bishops of the United States decided to write a plan for young adult ministry. As a distinct ministry in the church, young adult ministry had existed for no more than 20 years, and this was the first time the bishops had specifically addressed this area. The development of the pastoral plan took three years and was overseen by the Bishops' Committee on the Laity. During the development process the Committee held listening sessions with young adults and young adult ministers, consulted with groups involved in this ministry, and conducted a survey of diocesan offices. The final product incorporates the best and most up-to-date thinking about young adult ministry. Sons and Daughters of the Light was approved unanimously by the bishops in November, 1996.

The University of Washington Newman Center is the Catholic Church for the University community. The parish is largely made up of students looking to participate actively in their Catholic faith and to grow spiritually in a community with others of similar faith backgrounds. Although most of the members of our community are UW students and people who live in the University District, all are welcome to our community.

Mass is celebrated our our center daily (except Saturdays). In addition to celebrating the Mass, the Newman Center sponsors many activities such as Bible studies, guest speakers, community service and, of course, social events!

Our Mission
We believe that Jesus has called each of us by name to be Church, the gathering of the People of God. We believe that Jesus calls us to be in community as this Church, the Prince of Peace Newman Center at the University of Washington.

Above all, we want our community to be a place of welcome: to be a place of welcome and joy as we worship together, caring for all those who come here, to be a place of welcome and resource for those seeking to learn about scripture, sacraments and the Catholic tradition, to be a place of welcome, hope and solace for those in need, both within our own community and in the world. We know that our God is not only discovered here but beyond these walls in other peoples and communities. We therefore also welcome those who are not members of the Catholic tradition to join with us in those events--worship and social--to the extent they feel called by the Spirit.

As a Newman Center, our special outreach and the reason we are formed is to share the Good News with the University community: students, faculty and staff, but we also welcome those not associated with the University in a formal way, to join us in this task of realizing the Incarnation on this campus.

Jesus has called us by name and made us welcome. We, the community of the UW Newman Center now extend this welcome to all who enter and invite you to join us in making this house a true place of peace.

A little bit about us ...

Catholic Campus Ministry is a student-led organization working to promote spiritual growth and faith on the UPS campus. Students gather weekly to share, laugh, and pray. We coordinate opportunities for students to attend the local churches and we occasionally provide worship services on campus. Each year, we organize retreats, service opportunities, soup and bread dinners during Lent, and a Stations of the Cross service on Good Friday. The Newman Center at the University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University also invites UPS students to take part in their retreats and activities. Catholics and non-Catholics alike are encouraged to join Catholic Campus Ministry in our exploration and investigation of the Catholic faith.
